Power Trip Trail
The Power Trip Trail is a 1.6-kilometre trail that features one of Canada's largest educational demonstrations of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies. The demonstrations and innovative programs offered at the Kortright Centre can provide you with the inspiration and knowledge to help you make informed decisions about important technology and lifestyle choices to reduce your impact on the natural environment.
Demonstrations along the trail include:
- Eight kilowatts of grid-connected photovoltaic systems
- 500 watts of remote photovoltaic systems
- Canada's first roof-mounted grid-connected photovoltaic system
- Canada's first solar shingle roof system
- 120 watt solar water pumping system
- 10 kilowatt grid connected wind turbine
- 50 and 400 watt small wind turbines
- An energy efficient cottage powered entirely by solar and wind energy
- Three solar hot water heating demonstrations
- Solar assisted ground source heat pump
- Hybrid popular plantation
- Wood energy display
- High efficiency wood burning appliances (wood and pellet)
- Biological wetland waste water treatment system
- Composting toilets

Renewable Energy Cottage
The Renewable Energy Cottage is an energy-efficient building that relies solely on renewable forms of energy to meet all its heating and electrical needs. As environmental awareness grows, people are recognizing the consequences of wasting energy. Through the use of renewable energy and energy-efficient products, we can all help reduce our demands on the planet.
When you visit the Renewable Energy Cottage at the Kortright Centre you can learn about:
- Solar and wind electricity
- Solar water heating
- Solar and wood heating
- Saving energy
- Energy efficient lighting
- Energy-saving appliances
- Building design
- High levels of insulation
- Air tight construction
- Energy efficient windows and doors
- Water and energy-efficient landscaping

GreenWorks Building
Located near the Visitor Centre at the Kortright Centre, The GreenWorks building showcases three areas of sustainable technology:
- Wastewater treatment
- Renewable energy
- Resource efficiency
The GreenWorks building is themed around the conservation and recycling of our natural resources. It uses a carefully engineered combination of solar and geothermal energy to provide its own heat and electricity.
- The building is energy efficient in terms of both heat and electrical energy
- The building reduces water consumption by 90 per cent through the replacement of washroom fixtures with low-flow fixtures, and by reusing water from the wetland treatment system to flush toilets
- The building is constructed entirely of recycled steel treated with zinc, a naturally occurring element that increases the life of the building
