Solar for Building Professionals |

This course covers system components and configurations for Photovoltaic and Solar Domestic Hot Water applications. Participants will receive an overview of costs associated with different system designs, design limitations, and financial modeling. This course will introduce participants to the FIT and microFIT programs, as well as issues relating to renting your rooftop, and how solar installations may affect real estate. This course will concentrate on opportunities for building professionals, including contractors, property mangers, property owners, business professionals and others.

Solar Hot Water Training Course |

TBA The Solar Hot Water (SHW) training and certification program is offered in partnership with CANSIA (Canadian Solar Industries Association). This course is designed to assure the skills of SHW installers and provides consumers with confidence that certified individuals are professional and competent installers. In many cases, this certification is a requirement for access to federal, provincial and municipal market-incentives. CanSIA Solar Hot Water System Installer Certification is not a professional license issued by a government agency, and does not authorize a certificant to practice. CanSIA Certified Solar Hot Water System Installers must comply with all legal requirements related to practice, including licensing laws. |

Consumers Guide to Ground Source and Efficient Heating Systems |

Spring March 24 Time 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Note: This is a half-day workshop) Cost $45 + HST
This workshop examines the features of various high efficiency heating systems for both domestic hot water and residential space heating needs. Topics include: ground source heat pumps, on-demand hot water heaters, combination boilers, masonry wood heaters, and heat distribution systems, such as radiant floor, high velocity air & zoned forced air. We'll also examine the integration of heating systems with solar domestic and space heating systems and heat/energy recovery ventilation systems (HRV, ERV). A tour of a ground source heat pump, radiant floor and solar hot water heating system at Kortright is part of this program. Participants will also tour the Archetype Sustainable House. This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the criteria for the selection of a wind energy system. Participants will explore the fundamentals of wind energy, its components, and the application of off-grid and grid-tied wind systems. Topics covered will include the various types and sizes of machines, towers and the procedures for installation. The instructor will also be conducting a tour of the seven installed wind turbines along the Kortright Power Trip Trail. This workshop connects the fundamentals of photovoltaic and wind energy production with the components required for an off-grid system operation. The topics covered in this course include charge controllers, batteries, inverters and generators, and are applicable to battery-based back-up power systems. Utility Connected Photovoltaic Installation (UPVI) |

(Prerequisite - PVG / Recommended - GEI) Spring April 15 / June 24 Cost $195 + HST
The Utility PV Installation course offers participants a hands-on opportunity to assemble and install a grid-tied PV system. The course begins with the theory of site assessment, installation and system sizing. Participants are then broken into small groups and are able to assemble a complete grid-tied system. The equipment used in this workshop is representative of systems currently being installed under the FIT program throughout Ontario. Off-Grid Systems Installation (OGSI) |

(Prerequisite - GEI, PVG & OGS) Summer July 22 Cost $195 + HST
This workshop will lead participants through the full installation of an off grid system. The course is an outdoor practicum beginning with the rooftop installation of modules followed by the connection of the charge controller, a full scale inverter and battery bank. At the end of the workshop, each station will be powered-up using renewable energy provided exclusively by the sun.
