The Neurodivergence in Nature program at Kortright Centre for Conservation offers a unique, sensory-friendly experience designed to engage neurodivergent children with the natural world in a supportive, individualized, and unhurried way.
Through a combination of activities, sensory exploration, and guided observations, students will connect with nature at their own pace, while embracing their diverse ways of experiencing the world.
This program provides an inclusive environment where each child can explore forests, fields, and natural spaces using their senses of sight, sound, touch, and smell. They will have the opportunity to interact with nature artifacts – examining textures, colours, shapes, and patterns – while learning fascinating facts about the plants, animals, and objects they encounter.
The natural world at Kortright changes with the seasons, offering unique experiences throughout the year. During each visit, the program will highlight seasonal features and can be adapted to focus on specific topics of interest, based on your needs.
Whether it’s the sight of new spring growth or the quiet of a winter landscape, each session offers something new to discover.
The Neurodivergence in Nature program is flexible and can be tailored to meet the sensory, physical, and transitional needs of your group, with attention to accommodations and support.
This child-led program encourages curiosity, exploration, and learning at each child’s comfort level.
While a Kortright Environmental Educator will guide the experience, the program emphasizes collaborative participation with accompanying teachers and support staff. Together, they will help students explore interactive stations, engage with animals, and create meaningful connections to nature.
This program is a perfect opportunity for neurodivergent children to enjoy nature in a safe, understanding, and fun environment.
